Chapter 12

Andy had not waited to see what had transpired. It was Sunday. It was her day off. Sadly, it was Evie’s day off as well. Frustratingly, they had been moments from making love for the first time.

Andy sighed heavily. Worry etched her face as she straightened her workout clothes. She’d managed to grab them before bolting, first for her bathroom and then to the living room.

Andy took in the early morning sun as it was slowly bathing its orange color across the many buildings surrounding the bar.

The quiet of the day was not lost on Andy as she recalled the sound of her girlfriend’s voice and the words spoken. Carefully Andy adjusted the speed on her treadmill. It would warm her muscles before moving on to the more strenuous exercise machines. It also relaxed her mind a little.

It was something Andy needed desperately. While it was for the best she remembered her past, facing it was not the easiest thing she had ever done.

Yet with Evie holding her, it had felt almost as natural as breathing to confess the horrors of her childhood. The protectiveness she felt from her girlfriend was the same as the first night they had slept together in the hotel room. It was something she hoped never changed.

Andy nearly tripped when a memory flashed in her mind. She hadn’t thought about it since she had met Evie yet it would have made perfect sense for her to have.

While all those terrible things had happened when she was ten, something else had started. Andy turned off the machine. She used the terrycloth towel sitting across the seat of the exercise bike and wiped her sweaty forehead and hands.

An image of someone had entered her mind. After taking several huge swallows of water, Andy felt she was ready to focus enough for the next torturous machine.

As Andy stepped on to the elliptical, the image flashed in her mind once again. This time, she was somewhat prepared for it and her rhythm was easily gained on the dreaded machine. Soon she was perspiring once again. It wasn’t all because of the aggressive workout she was engaging in.

The image was causing her to sweat as well. It was from one of the dreams Andy had had when the incidents had begun long ago. There had been a slightly older girl, yet she had been slightly smaller than her own frame which had sprouted before most of her classmates.

The blonde hair had been shoulder length and seemed like it would be silky to the touch. What really had Andy so distracted was the eyes. The smiling green eyes were the exact shade gracing the eyes of her girlfriend.

It was one of the first things that had attracted Andy to Evie. While she had always protested even wanting to be friends with her girlfriend, deep down she knew there had been an instant attraction.

Andy could not admit it. Even having had her relationship of seven years ended so publicly, there was no way she could make herself vulnerable to a friendship, let alone a sexual one.
